Happy Tuesday! Today I’m sharing one of my favorite coaching strategies of all time: STAY IN YOUR LANE. I hear a common struggle from clients on a regular basis: I’m exhausted from everyone else’s “stuff”. Yes, it is so easy to feel pulled here and there from everyone else’s stress, concerns, and life. On a regular basis, clients confess their over involvement in everyone else’s life, whether it be by being in the know, FOMO (fear of missing out) or over concern. When it feels like this is a struggle, you are right; it is! Most of the time when you recognize that it’s sucking your energy, it’s the perfect time to do something about it. Like I always say, you can’t control what happens to you (=circumstance), but you CAN control how you react (=thoughts, feelings & actions).

For example, say that you’re trying to lose weight and have made up your mind to make some small but important changes to get to your goal (which is the best way to do it!). At work, you’re doing all of the things to get weight loss results BUT you notice that a few coworkers are losing weight faster than you (so you think) and you now feel left behind and less confident in your skills. This is a classic example of when to gently remind yourself to “STAY IN YOUR LANE”. It simply means to mind your own business and do what is best for you. By cutting out the brain chatter of not doing enough, not doing what everyone else is doing, and not going along with everyone else, your goals will be clearer and more specific. Therefore, you will keep your focus on yourself.

“STAY IN YOUR LANE” is a critical strategy for improving focus and concentration, respecting your goals and intentions, and saving energy for what is important to you: YOUR HEALTH. Just like driving a car in traffic, you need to stay in your lane to arrive at your destination safely. Picture yourself in your dream car with both hands on the wheel in 4 lanes of traffic going 70 miles per hour and realize how important it is to stay in your lane… literally!

This week, try the “STAY IN YOUR LANE” strategy and let me know how it went in the comments. I’m pretty sure you’ll learn how to catch yourself and get back in your lane when overwhelm and stress come to visit your brain. As always, YOU are in the driver’s seat of your own life! Bon voyage!

Happy Tuesday! Have you chosen a health goal yet? If so, did you take one small step to get started? That’s all it takes! If not, what are you waiting for?

This week during a session with a client, I was reminding her to be her own cheerleader and to not wait for others to notice her progress and to compliment her. She kept saying how disappointing it is that no one compliments her weight loss and that no one has noticed. For her, she thought that no one noticed and no one cared because that is how she chose to see it. I asked her if she had considered that people are preoccupied with life and navigating through the pandemic and simply may not have taken time to look beyond their own lives, which has NOTHING to do with her at all. She paused and considered that was very possible. I also then asked her why people’s opinions of her mattered so much! WOW! What a thought! I always say that people’s opinions of you are none of your business. That is a game changer!

The bigger piece to her frustration was something that we dove into a little deeper. The more she talked and the more I listened, it was crystal clear to her that it’s got to be up to her to be her own cheerleader. She has that responsibility. She has the power to make that happen. People spend most of their lives looking for validation and acceptance by being complimented and praised. We all want to belong and to be loved, no matter what group we are in; that’s part of being human! So, how would it change your perspective if you cheered on yourself with love and pride? How would it feel if you didn’t waste time waiting for a compliment from someone other than yourself? How would it feel if you praised yourself first before others did? I want to offer this strategy this week to see how it reframes the way you expect acknowledgement from others.

Does this sound familiar to you? Do you feel disappointed and defeated when you look great and no one notices? Do you expect others to compliment you? How do you feel when you think someone hasn’t noticed you? These are important questions as you start to see yourself as your most important cheerleader. After all, how you treat yourself is how others see you as wanting to be treated. What an AHA moment!

Cheer loudest and first for yourself and see what happens this week! You’re worth it!

Happy first Tuesday of 2022! This month, I will offer you one action step and one mindset shift each week to help you jumpstart your 2022 health goals! I’m a firm believer in one small step at a time in order to reach your goals! Our brains like information in smaller chunks and will remember habits and patterns more easily that way!

This week, think about your intentions with your sweets and sugar! Are you giving them up all together or are you cutting back? Both ways can work depending on your motivation, determination, and decision making. It’s up to you! There is never only ONE way to do something, so do what will work for you!

If you have decided to reduce the number of sugary treats that you’ll be eating, I’d like to offer my concept of SWEET SATURDAY. When my son, Matthew, was young, he did not get very many sugary treats most of the time. It was easy to decide what he could or could not eat then based on what we allowed. As he got older, it got harder to keep up with, especially once he went to school where treats were offered as “normal” rewards and celebrations. To help regulate his sugar intake for the sake of his health, not as deprivation, I created the idea of SWEET SATURDAY. The guidelines were easy: no sugary treats, desserts, etc. during the week and ONE treat was okay on Saturday. I know that I got some criticism for it, but it ended up being a very good learning experience as well as a healthier alternative. It introduced the power of choice and the excitement of anticipation. Matthew was very selective with his one treat per week and learned how to make choices with quality of food in mind. It became something to look forward to instead of taking for granted and the anticipation of it was something to really look forward to. Even today at age eighteen, although SWEET SATURDAY is a practice of the past for him, he makes better choices by thinking about what to eat and when. He is aware of healthy vs. less healthy choices and is now old enough to decide for himself.

It’s a mindset shift from “what I can’t have” to “what I choose to have”! I know that you will find this more empowering which will then lead to longer lasting habits that stick. This week, I invite you to give this a try if it matches what your goals are regarding limiting sweets. Put your own spin on it and let me know in the comments what you did, how it went, and how you thought about treats differently! You have nothing to lose by giving it a try…except extra sugar!

Happy Tuesday! Here we are 4 days away from Christmas! It has been my pleasure leading you from the fall into this season with helpful tips and action steps to launch you into better healthy habits, especially at this difficult time of yummy temptations and treats galore. I hope you took at least one strategy and tried it.

If you tried to avoid gaining holiday weight and it worked, good for you! If you implemented some new strategies and lost some weight, good for you! If you gained some weight, today can be the day you make some changes. The point is that there is no right or wrong place to be right now. The power is within yourself. YOU get to decide the direction in which you move your health.

Now is a good opportunity to step back and pause to think about what you did differently and how it worked for you. How much effort did you put into getting results? How did you shift old ways of thinking to newer ones? How do your results feel? How do you feel about your overall health today and how is that different from a few months ago? This is the time to assess what you did and what you didn’t do so that you can move to the next step.

The new year is soon upon us and most people jumpstart new eating patterns and new resolutions thinking that they should wait until then. I’d like to suggest that you start one new habit TODAY! Why wait? What are you waiting for…really! Something to think about!

I will be guiding new clients as the year begins, so why haven’t you invested in your health by working with me? I’m ready to help you look better, feel better, and be your best self on the inside and out! Contact me today to set up a complimentary discovery session so that we can get started on your journey! I’m ready…are you???

Happy Tuesday! Here we are the week before Christmas! If you’ve been working on a weight loss goal at this hectic time of the year, good for you! How’s that going? If you’re hanging on tight just hoping not to pack on extra pounds, that’s an admirable plan. So, how are you doing? If you’ve already thrown in the towel and said, “WHY BOTHER?”,  how do you really feel about that? How is that goal serving you?

The good news is that there is not one way to do anything, so there is no right or wrong answer to these questions. YOU get to decide your goals and how important getting results is to you. YOU get to put actions into place that you want to do! YOU get to place any level of priority on your health goals. YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOU!

That being said, I always tell clients that if they are ready to make some changes, they will be more successful by doing ONE new change at a time. Overwhelm and defeat set in when a goal is too big and is expected to be reached too fast. Ironically, I usually share this food analogy with my clients to help them to take small steps one at a time: We don’t eat a whole pan of brownies in one big gulp; we take small bites, one at a time. Why would you try to do everything all at once? Habits take time to form and they take time to reframe.

Patience is the gift I invite you to give to yourself this week as you try to make some healthy changes to lose weight or to be a little healthier on the inside and out or to just “survive” the holidays with minimal to no weight gain. None of us just stood up and started running when we were toddlers, did we? Absolutely not! We wobbled, we fell down, we cried, we got back up and tried again hundreds of times. One day, we finally walked! And look at how well you are doing that today!

Changing your health, especially during the holidays, requires patience, kindness to yourself, determination, perseverance, and the reality of doing one thing at a time! As you walk through this week, be aware of that one new thing that you are doing and be proud of your choice to make a change! Let me know what your one step is and how it went for you this week! I’ll be cheering you every step of the way!

Happy Tuesday! What happens when you slip up and make some mistakes with your weight loss goals? Do you get back up and move forward or do you slide down the waterfall of despair and plunge into further slips? Do you reset or restart your efforts? How do you feel after you slide backwards a bit? These are great questions to digest!

Restarting means going all the way back to the beginning and returning to step one. This action very often includes a bit of a binge on the way there. For example, if you had been avoiding sweets and had done well for a week and then you lost all control and over ate and then said forget it! Why because you think that you’ve blown the whole goal so you might as well overeat! It actually feels very defeating and worse when the eating frenzy is over than it did when you first slipped.

Resetting is when you make a mistake and press the pause button to think it over, own the misstep, and make a plan to move forward right away. For example, if you had been avoiding sweets and had done well for a week and then you lost all control and over ate, you would pause and look at the situation. Figure out why it happened and how you feel about it. You then would make the choice to forgive yourself, love yourself, and move forward with your goal. The key word is FORGIVE yourself!

We all make mistakes and it’s okay. Shifting your mindset to accepting your mistakes and moving forward can make all the difference in the world to achieving your goal. If you’re a perfectionist, as I once WAS, you tend to look at situations with an “all or none” perspective. I’d like to offer the possibility of how it feels to reset your actions and to love yourself as you move forward with your goals to get the results that you want.

There is a quote by Max Lucado that says, “There is a reason the windshield is bigger than the rear view mirror. Your future matters more than your past.” How does that sit with you? Are you willing to try it the next time you slip up? Just look forward!

As the holiday temptations and stress come at you like a tidal wave, I encourage you to choose how you react to your mistakes. Will you restart or reset? How kind will you be to yourself? How will it feel when you decide your course of action? I can’t wait to find out what you decide…after all, you are empowered to make your own decisions!

Happy Tuesday! Ready or not, tomorrow is December 1st! The holidays are in full swing and how are you ready to be your best self? The condition of your environment plays a vital part in how you reach your goals, especially when it comes to your health. Clear the clutter is one of my favorite strategies to offer my clients as a first step toward a goal. It means simplifying your physical environment so that you can eliminate some stress and overwhelm which frees up energy for achieving your goals.

I suggest to my clients that they pick one spot in their home that overwhelms them on a regular basis as a starting point. A common area of the house is the kitchen, specifically the pantry. If your goal is to lose weight, it’s a good idea to get rid of foods that won’t serve you while you work hard to achieve this goal. It might be time to toss the junk food or to condense it to a much smaller space. You’ll feel relieved to throw away or give away unwanted items in order to set yourself up for success. It may mean adding new, more nutritious options to your pantry once items are neatly organized and easily accessible. We humans easily accumulate more than we need, which can feel overwhelming. It’s a good time to simplify your life by cleaning up your space.

Perhaps as you lose weight you  might have a love/hate relationship with your closet or your dresser. In that case, start with ONE spot and declutter it. It will actually inspire you to keep going once a space has been reorganized. Do you have a drawer in your house that you can hardly open? Is your car full of candy wrappers (although you can’t remember how they got there)? Look around your home and zero in on ONE space as a start. I promise that you will feel so good and light when you finish. In my closet, I have “the one in one out rule” to keep my space more organized. If I buy something new, something has to come out to be donated. Speaking of which, it’s always recommended to donate your unwanted items that are still in very good condition to those who are in need. That’s the easy part.

Does this sound like a fun way to set yourself up for less stress as you work on your health goals? Are you interested in starting with just one spot? Are you motivated to simplify your surroundings? I challenge you this week to get started! Let me know what you did and how that space feels now! You’ll be so happy with more brainpower left for more important things like improving your health! As I’ve said before, small steps lead to big changes! This is a fun way to give it a try! Careful–it can be contagious!

Happy Tuesday! Happy Thanksgiving in a few days! The holidays are under way for sure! Given what the world has been through over the last 19 months, there is still so much out of balance and so many feelings of uncertainty and confusion. It feels like we should be able to ask “Are we there yet?” and get the response, “YES!” Unfortunately, we’re all still navigating through so many challenges in addition to managing daily life. Overwhelm has become an everyday feeling for so many of us. Does this resonate with you? Are you still treading water? How does that feel? Would you like to trade that feeling for a more uplifting one?

Once again, this is where choice comes into play. We can allow ourselves to feel all doom and gloom and helpless or we can look at our lives through the lens of gratitude. Which one sounds more productive? I’m not at all suggesting that we ignore real life and it’s struggles, don’t get me wrong. What I am offering is a double dose of gratitude each day we wake up and live another day. What would happen if one of our first thoughts of the day would be gratitude for all that we have and for all that we don’t have? How would you feel to set your intention each morning by being thankful for the people in your circle? How would you feel if you looked in the mirror and smiled back at yourself being thankful for your life?

This week, I’d like to offer you the possibility of stepping back from the noise and chatter, taking a pause, and thinking about the ways that you are grateful for so many things, and then…saying them out loud! Go ahead and say it! I promise that it will feel so much better than keeping them silent! Careful…it is contagious and will feel so refreshing!
